S.M. Shafaiet Mahmud is a Bangladeshi architect, researcher, project manager, and entrepreneur with expertise in sustainable architecture, urban regeneration, computational design, and project implementation. He completed his Bachelor of Architecture from American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) in 2017 and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
His award-winning thesis, “Urban Remediation: Turning Landfill Site into Public Park,” proposed transforming a landfill into a community-oriented urban park integrated with a ward-based waste-processing and recycling facility. The project received the year’s Best Thesis Award and was published by Context BD.
Shafaiet began his career as an intern architect at Volumezero Architects. In 2018, he was awarded in the international design competition “Inhabiting Nature,” organized by Aditya College of Architecture, Mumbai. He also participated in the EVOLO Skyscraper Design Competition, the Institute of Architects Bangladesh Architecture Jamboree, and Habitat for Humanity Bangladesh’s “Safe Sanitation 2014” workshop, where his community toilet design received second prize.
He co-authored the paper “Theorizing Empathy: The Anthropology of a Girl’s Toilet” with Dr. Adnan Morshed for a conference of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture in Washington, D.C. His technical expertise includes complex geometry, parametric modelling, and computational design using Rhinoceros and Grasshopper.
For nearly seven years, he served as Project Architect at the Centre for Inclusive Architecture and Urbanism, BRAC University. As Project Manager and Project Architect, he contributed to the design development and execution of eight BRAC regional offices across rural Bangladesh. His other projects included the BRAC Multistoried Office Building at Thakurpara, Cumilla, and the BRAC University Residential Campus dormitory renovation.
He also coordinated as a co-curator of the exhibition “Architecture as Freedom” in Washington, D.C.. He collaborated with the University of Liverpool as a Senior Research Associate under an Official Development Assistance research grant. He later led fieldwork as Senior Research Associate and Project Architect for “Multi-Purposing Flyovers: A Policy Framework for Elevated Road Infrastructures in Bangladesh,” under the UNDP EI4NG project.
Shafaiet is a full member of the Institute of Architects Bangladesh and an enlisted architect with RAJUK. He currently serves as the Managing Director and Principal Architect of MAVIN studio and also directs MACRO Design and Consultant Ltd. and Macro Developments Ltd. MAVIN studio is a sister concern of MACRO Group.
His professional work focuses on sustainable architecture, urban development, contemporary interiors, custom furniture, project management, research, and the creation of socially responsive and future-oriented built environments.
